It is usually the father who cheers his child on his/her achievements. But here was actress Priyanka Chopra, "a proud daughter", who launched her father Ashok Chopra's debut devotional music album Haal Mureedan Da Kehna Saturday night.

Composed by Surjeet Singh Parmar, the CD contains 8 shabads, based on Indian classical music (ragas), derives its title from the opening track, 'Mittar pyare noon, 'Haal Muriddan da kehna', a 'khayal' (thought) of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, which he composed in the Macheevada jungle (near Ludhiana), after the martyrdom of his whole family.

"We spent a lot of time getting the soul of this sad 'khayal' just right, and by the time we got the true feel of it, it was 4 am. That is when we recorded it," said Ashok Chopra.

The same event also launched the "Save the Girl Child" Campaign initiated by Priyanka Chopra, Ashok Chopra and Vikramjit S. Sahney (Head of Sun Foundation), a well-known entrepreneur, educationist and social worker.

The Foundation has made a two-minute documentary on the subject, as well as a public interest message, delivered by Priyanka Chopra, in English and Hindi.

"When I watched this documentary, I felt - 'What if I was unwanted by my parents? I wouldn't be here at all, my achievements would be nothing. I think it's time people start having the belief that a girl can be as much successful if not more than a boy...A girl is as precious as any boy," said Priyanka.

"My father has clapped, cheered and cried for me on my achievements and failures. But doing it for him today makes me really proud," Priyanka said at the event. "My entire family including parents and my grandparents were here for the National Awards ceremony. It's was a big moment for me and I wanted my entire family to be part of it. On Saturday, my father's music album releases. So the family has double reason to be together.

The album, produced by Saregama India Ltd, has verses from the Guru Granth Sahib, sung by Ashok Chopra, a cosmetic surgeon in Mumbai

"I am happy that with the blessings of everybody, I have been able to launch this album," said Ashok Chopra.

Dr. Ashok Chopra with Priyanka Chopra Haal Muriddan Da Kehna, a shabad album on Saregama, was released on March 20 in New Delhi.

The album was launched by Vikramjit Singh Sahney and Priyanka Chopra along with Saregama’s Atul Churamani.

This album of verses from the Guru Granth Sahib is sung by Dr. Ashok Chopra (Priyanka’s father) and composed by Surjeet Singh Parmar.

Dr. Ashok Chopra, MS, now 60, was a brilliant student as well as a gifted singer. He was and remains a die-hard fan of Mohammed Rafi and Madan Mohan. For eleven continuous years, he conducted the school prayers, led the school choir and was always the winner of his school’s singing competitions. Later, he teamed up with his brother Pawan to form a musical troupe. While he was in his third year of Medicine, music director Usha Khanna invited him to come to Mumbai and sing for films
. But he rejected the offer, preferring to complete his studies and to serve the country. On completing medical studies, he joined the Army in 1974, retired in 1997 and settled in Bareilly, where he was last posted, till 2001. He now practices in Mumbai.

During his posting at Ladakh, he came in close contact with the Sikh religion, which he greatly admires. In Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), his clinic was situated opposite a Muslim dargah (shrine), and the chanting there also had a deep impact on his musical mind. An audience of 3,00,000 that had gathered for ziarat (holy visit), applauded Dr. Chopra when he delivered kalaam-e-Ala Hazrat (compositions of the venerated saint).
When daughter Priyanka, also a musical prodigy, opted for a career in films, the family moved to Mumbai. Here, he now takes lessons from Pandit Sukhdev Chaturvedi
