Delhi to have world-class transport system: Dikshit New Delhi, Sep 9 (PTI)
The transport system in the capital is all set for a major overhaul before
commencement of the Commonwealth Games as the city will have a total of
10,000 low-floor buses, 272 km of metro rail line and 100 fly-overs by
2010.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said the PWD will spend Rs 4,000 crore on Commonwealth Games projects. With 100 fly-overs, 272 kms of metro line and 10,000 low-floor buses in DTC fleet, the public transport system will have a new look before commencement of the big event, Dikshit said after laying the foundation stone of a Grade Separator and a fly-over in east Delhi. She said a scheme has been prepared for upgrading the streetlights on the PWD roads to international standards which would cost a total of Rs 198 crore. Dikshit said the government would deploy around 10,000 new buses, including modern low-floor buses, within two years to bring a comfortable and complete change in transport scenario before commencement of Commonwealth Games 2010. Around 20 per cent buses would be air-conditioned red coloured ones, which would provide comfortable intra-city journey and encourage residents to use public transport. The Chief Minister has
exhorted all stakeholder departments and agencies to have effective coordination
for commissioning of infrastructure for the prestigious event.
