India got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start after an emphatic
87-run victory over co-hosts Bangladesh in the opening match of the ICC
Cricket World Cup, 2011.
Virender Shewag stole the show with a blistering 175 off 140 balls, which included 14 4's and five 6's, as India notched up a mammoth 370-4 in their allotted 50 overs. Sehwag was aided by another stellar performance from young ViratKohli (100*off 83 balls) who scored his fifth century in ODI's and first in a World Cup. Sehwag hit the first ball of the tournament for four, rocking on the backfoot to punch Shafiul Islam to the cover fence, before reaching his half-century with a six. Sehwag and Tendulkar hammered 69 for the first wicket by the 11th over when Bangladesh broke through thanks to a stroke of luck and miscommunication on behalf of the Indian openers, as Sachin Tendulkar (28) was run out by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. GautamGambhir continued the run spree by adding 83 for the second wicket with Sehwag before he was bowled by Mahmudullah for 39. Sehwag and Kohli then put on a 203-run partnership and took India to 370-4, leaving Bangladesh with an asking rate of 7.5 runs per over in the first meeting between the two neighbouring countries since Bangladesh's shock upset over India in the 2007 edition. Bangladesh made a valiant effort to chase down the total, with TamimIqbal (70) and Shakib Al Hasan (55) being the notable contributors. All their opening six batsmen scored 25 and over, but no one could match Sehwag's knock which proved to be the difference. Bangladesh battled to 283-9 in their 50 overs and can take pride from their batting performance and from the fact they didn't get bowled out. For India, Munaf Patel (48-4) was the star performer with the ball, while Zaheer Khan also picked up two wickets. India now enjoy a leisurely nine-day break before their next group game versus England on the 27th of February in Bangalore. Scores: India 370-4 in 50 overs (Sehwag 175, Kohli 100*) Bangladesh: 283-9 in 50 overs (Iqbal 70, Al Hasan 55, Munaf 48-4) Result: India won by 87 runs. Man of the Match: Virender
