IIM-A students take Left
turn
NEW DELHI/AHMEDABAD: IIM-Ahmedabad
students as interns at the CPM office? Sounds implausible, but it might
just happen in the new year with future honchos learning first-hand how
comrades manage themselves, the success story of West Bengal, not-so-successful
stories elsewhere and the dilemma of marrying elements of new economy with
their alternate economic vision.
The idea of an internship
with CPM, the first for any political party in the country, came from students
during politburo member Sitaram Yechury’s lecture at IIM-A on December
9.
Yechury had agreed to the
idea, little realising that students would actually take it forward. Students,
obviously, wanted to know more about the party that lends crucial support
to the Congress at the Centre.
Last week, Yechury received
a message from course director Anil Gupta asking whether the party would
be interested in taking the students.
Yechury, currently out of
town, is believed to have told Gupta the party would positively consider
it. When contacted, IIM-A spokesman Ashok Shah said it was "quite likely".
He said, "IIM-A is not a
school of business but a management school. We are not averse to students
going to CPM for internship. There is as much management involved in running
of parties as a company. This year, a student from the North-East has shown
desire to do internship with an NGO."
