Hidden Beaches
Sinquerim Beach
A clean white sandy beach…
which is a stone throws away from the historic Fort Aguada. An early 17th
century fort that was built by the Portuguese to control the entry into
River Mandovi…and to protect Goa from any enemy attack. The feeling of
serenity of this area seeps blissfully into the aura of the beach surrounding
this monument.
Bambolim Beach
A small, clean beach that
is largely undiscovered is what adds richness to the identity of Bambolim.
Situated in a shaded spot before the mouth of the river Zuari makes this
an easily missed spot. Lying all along the hill between Goa Medical College
and Goa University, this beach is blanketed with broken mother-of –pearl
and other shells…always creating bliss for avid shell collectors. Thick
coconut groves line the beach and offer a much needed canopy for shade
and privacy.
Benaulim Beach
A serene and pristine environment
always uplifts the mood. And Benaulim beach is a far cry away from the
maddening crowd.
According to Hindu mythology,
this is the place where the arrow of Lord Parsurama ( the sixth incarnation
of Lord Vishnu) landed into the sea and as when the water retreated…it
revealed the land of Goa. The church of St. John the Baptist on the hill
is a wonderful example of Goan Christian architecture. The natural landscape
of palm trees, clear water and well planned placing of the rustic wooden
boats… helps make the surroundings completely photogenic.
Palolem Beach
One of the most enchanting
beaches in Goa relatively deserted, with backdrop of Western Ghats. Palolem
is a beach of white sand facing a blue bay between two headlands. Panaji,
the capital, is more than 70 km away from Palolem Goa. “Paradise Beach”
is the pseudonym for this haven and til just a few years ago…Palolem beach
was among the few virgin beaches left in Goa. It is a beach highly popular
for its dolphin cruises and decadent fishing trips. And at the northern
end of the beach is a tiny island in the middle of a fresh water stream
that can be reached by swimming across at low tide.
Agonda Beach
The last few standing is
Agonda beach when it comes to one of the ultimate stretches of virgin sand.
Mostly frequented by picnickers…the crystal clear water allows one to see
the bottom of the shore while swimming. The more adventurous type can rent
a bicycle and cycle cross country to the beach. Dotted with palm trees
on golden brown sands…the shores are softly washed by the gentle waves
of the sea. There are no resorts near the beach…but if you want to stay
here, you can pitch a tent and sleep with the stars…though at your own
risk. An ideal getaway if one is looking for tranquility and silence. |
Bogmalo Beach
Famous for its diving expeditions,
the small fishing village of Bogmalo is bordered by palm trees and is exquisitely
breathtaking. The location of this brilliant area is such that it forms
the end of Colva bay that adds to its exquisite beauty. Reasonably well
kept and clean…is the attractive factor that draws many a customer to this
place. The water is safe and shallow… till quite some distance which makes
it ideal for going on a diving expedition. The coastline is not that extensive…but
perfect for catching a quick dive…or just for lazing around.
Arrosim and Uttorda Beach
The starting of a long gorgeous
continuous beach that finishes fifteen miles away by the River Sai…Charmingly
peacefull is what best describes the beaches of Arrosim and Uttorda.
Beautiful white sand that boosts the picturesque quality of this place…makes
this a must see. The new Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa is located on
this stretch, followed a little further down by the Kenilworth Hotel…that
helps in increasing a nirvana state of mind.

Verca Beach
Touted as being one of the
most opulent and exotic beaches that Goa has to offer…the ubiquitous soft
sands juxtaposed with the black lava rocks makes Verca a darling for weary
travelers. Clean…it offers greater privacy than most other beaches. Nature
is virtually unspoilt over here and you can really indulge yourself in
some soul searching and moments of peace.
Canacona Beach
This tiny fishing village
tends to attract resolved travelers that soon turn into diehard fans of
this beach. Cushioned white sands nestled separately by headlands and backed
by hills…gives Canacona a touch of heaven to its iridescent quality. The
hills are part of the Catigao Wildlife Sanctuary…therefore heightening
Canacona’s quality of being the great escape. |

Chapora Beach
Another small fishing village
that has withstood the onslaught of commercialization…Chapora beach has
managed to retain its rustic charm through the relentless efforts of its
villagers. Snuggled under a thick covering of coconut trees…this coastal
jewel is a serene visit. The glorious Chapora Fort that is now in ruins…still
provides a mystical old world charm to the place. |
