Hotel
accommodation suiting all wallet sizes from deluxe heritage hotels to economy
class is available both inside and outside the park. The forest department
has forest rest houses within Ranthambhore National Park, and private hotel
companies operate cottages, heritage hotels, wildlife resorts and the like
outside the park; some of these are extremely luxurious and offer nearly
all the facilities one would expect of a deluxe property.
As an alternative, one can
stay at Sawai Madhopur, which is well equipped with accommodation facilities,
both private and RTDC. It is so close to Ranthambhore that it actually
makes a lot of sense to stay in the town and visit the park during the
day.
Both within the park and
in Sawai Madhopur, accommodation tariffs range between Rs 400 to Rs 1500
per night, most rooms costing about Rs 500-800. Cottages, which are more
convenient for groups, cost about Rs 1200-1500 per night.
Due to its geographical location
in the desertscape of Rajasthan, Ranthambore National Park experiences
extreme weather conditions. During summer, the temperature shoots up in
the daytime making it extremely hot. The temperature at times reaches upto
45 degree celsius in the daytime. During winter the temperature hovers
around16-20 degree celsius in the daytime while during night, it goes down
to 2 degree celsius making it extremely chilly. The most pleasant time
to be with the wild animals is during winter and spring when the entire
region echoes with the chirping of the migratory birds. After the departure
of the monsoon, the park wears a green cover with abundant wildlife.
Vanya Vilas Resort
The Oberoi Group's new
luxury resort is located adjacent to the famous Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve.
Though the tiger is an elusive animal, sightings in the reserve are frequent.
President Bil Clinton, during his visit to India in March 2000, saw two
tigers at Ranthambhore in a single day.
The resort setting is
picture-perfect with a dramatic watercourse and sun-kissed private decks.
The luxury tents with finely embroidered canopies, luxurious bathrooms
and private walled gardens are in perfect contrast to the ruggedness of
the jungle.
Vanya Vilas is the first
luxury jungle resort in India. The resort consists of luxury air-conditioned
tents located discreetly so as to ensure maximum privacy. The tents, restaurant,
bar etc. occupy only 5% of the site, thus maintaining its natural beauty
Aman-I-Khas
The first impression
is of sheer space. As tents go, this is huge, set on a raised concrete
plinth measuring 12m x 12m. The covered area totals 108 square meters-
the size of a small apartment. The layout of Tent's is simplicity itself,
though it has taken the genius of jean-Michel Gathy to conceive it. The
entry is through a screened area that contains a dining table with chairs
and an armchair. Beyond lies an oversized daybed at the tent's center,
the canopy soaring to a whopping six meters. A soothing coffee and cream
scheme runs through the accommodation
Sher Bagh
Ranthambhore in the state
of Rajasthan is one finest places in the world to see wild tigers. Its
name comes from the vast fort, a citadel in the middle of the forest. The
fort was in existence in the 8th century and the area around is littered
with ruins: lake palaces, ancient step wells, cupolas, guard posts, temples
and memorial stones, all bear witness to Ranthambhore's varied and fascinating
history. Emperor Akbar fought a battle here for the control of the fort
in the 16th century. An 18th century traveller described the fort as being
famous throughout India, well protected, completely inacessible, concealed
in mountainous regions where the ridges were high and surrounded the entire
fort, leaving only the thick forest gorges below as entrances and exists
which could be defended. Today this tract of land has another ruler: the
tiger haunts the narrow gorges of the fort and has even been known to venture
atop it.By the turn of the century the Ranthambhore forests had become
the private hunting reserves of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Hunting was banned
in 1971 and a few years later, Project Tiger was launched. Few knew then
that Ranthambhore would become the finest tiger habitat in the world.
