What is the after effects of global
warming - Amitabh Bachchan warns
10th May 2007 09.00 IST Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan Tuesday pitched in to flag the issue of global warming and sent a message to the burgeoning middle class in the country to understand its dangerous after-effects. The occasion for Bachchan to voice concerns over the problem of global warming came at an event in Gurgaon to announce International Indian Film Academy's (IIFA) tie-up with Global Cool, an organisation working to prevent global warming. Bachchan, who is IIFA's Brand Ambassador, wanted every one to take "small and significant" steps to check the problem, which triggers adverse climate change. He also voiced concern over the "increasing consumerism." With the IIFA deciding to go green and highlight global warming it won't be just glamour for the Academy which has been holding its film awards functions annually for the last seven years. The Academy will hold the eighth edition in Yorkshire in the UK from June 7. Referring to a recent UN report, Bachchan said, "Eight years are very short time to save our planet and all of us should make small and significant steps to check global warming." "We know the US and China tops the list of countries which contribute to this effect and with the way India is developing, I'm sure our pollution level will also rise. With the burgeoning middle class and increased consumerism, it is important to understand the after effects of global warming," Bachchan added. A recent UN report had pointed out that climate change due to global warming could lead to fresh water shortages and decreasing crop yield in most parts of Asia and only eight years are on hand to prevent it
