New train from Kolkata to Goa

08th of November 2008.  A new train featuring a discotheque, live music and cabin crew will be launched on a 10-day journey from Kolkata to Goa via Mumbai on 2 January.

The trip is being organized by a Kolkata-based travel operator in partnership with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC).

The cost of the trip will be Rs35,000 per passenger, which will include transport in the three-tier air-conditioned coach, a day in Mumbai and a three-night stay at Goa beach resorts.

The 16-coach train, booked by the operators from Indian Railways, will make the trip to Goa in approximately 36 hours. “This is the first time a private operator has booked a train for retail tourism,” note the general manger of IRCTC for the eastern region, Vivek Srivastav.

Srivastav added: “We will be responsible for the on-board services, including food, hospitality, housekeeping, public address system and security. A multi-cuisine menu will be served on board.”

Rajib Mukherjee, the managing director of i-nova, the company booking the train from the Indian rail operator, commented: “An entire coach will be converted into a discotheque. Folk and baul songs will be performed on board. There will also be other entertainment options.”

When the train reaches north Goa, passengers will transfer to beach resorts. “In Goa, beaches are the most attractive places. Beach volleyball, water sports and rain dance will be organised. The route has been planned in such a way that passengers can enjoy the natural beauty,” Mukherjee added.
