Authorities to Lift Ban
From Trekking in Srinagar
Srinagar, June 23: The authorities
in Kashmir are planning to lift the ban imposed on trekking in Srinagar
and other parts of violence-hit Kashmir.
After the eruption of the
militancy in 1989, the authorities owing to security measures imposed blanket
ban on trekking in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir.
Now that the militant violence
is coming down and tourists in good numbers are arriving in Srinagar, the
authorities are planning to lift the ban on trekking.
A top tourism official, Farooq
Ahmad Shah said that they have taken up the issue with the security agencies.
He expressed the hope that the ban on trekking would be lifted soon and
trekkers would be free to conquer mountain ridges in Srinagar and other
parts of Kashmir.
At present, the Indian para-military
and army personnel are stationed on the mountains and the entry is restricted.
The Indian military and para-military soldiers have manning posts in the
mountain ridges and nobody is allowed to go close to the mountains without
the permission from authorities.
