Six miles (10 km) to the west of Kottayam is Kumarakom, which is being developed as a holiday resort. If the backwaters route is taken from Alleppey, Kumarakom, lying on the eastern shore of the Vembanad Lake, is only 6 miles (10 km) away from the coastal town. The islands on the lake across from Kumarakom are home to a large variety of migratory birds. The birds can be watched from the comfort of Baker's Bungalow or other vantage points on the lake's shore. The Kerala tourist au-thorities have taken over the mansion and have done well to preserve much of its yesteryear charm. The punkahs still hang from the ceiling, but no one manually operates those cloth-on-wood-frame fans any more. They remain, like much else in Baker's Bungalow, symbols of another age. Another 6 miles (10 km) north of Kottayam is Ettumanur, famous for its Shiva temple. Beautiful murals on the inner and outer walls and some superb sculpture in the temple are the special features of this ancient shrine. Non-Hindus are prohibited from entering the temple precincts. Northwest of Ettumanur, about 15 miles (25 km) along the road to Cochin, is Vaikom, where there is another famous Shiva temple. Here, too, NonHindus are not allowed to go beyond the temple gates. About 25 miles (40 km) beyond Vaikom is Cochin-Ernakulam, one of Kerala's most attractive tourist destinations in its own right; but the backwaters country has a special charm of its own Back
