Mahajan's ashes to be
immersed in holy rivers
An urn containing the ashes has been kept at the state party headquarters at Nariman Point in Mumbai to enable the party activists and workers to pay their respects, Goel said. He said some ashes would be immersed at Ban Ganga near Malabar Hill in Mumbai later on Friday, while another urn would be brought to Delhi soon. Mahajan's ashes would be immersed at holy places, including the Ganges at Haridwar, Varanasi and Garhmukhteshwar, Brahmaputra in Assam and Godavari at Nasik, he said. The BJP leader succumbed to bullet wounds on Wednesday evening, 12 days after his younger brother Pravin pumped three bullets into him at his Mumbai residence. Pravin to move court to
undergo psychiatric tests
Earlier, a magistrate has thrice rejected Pravin's plea to appoint a panel of doctors for undergoing psychiatric tests. The court did not assign any reason for rejecting it. "As the magistrate, before whom Pravin was produced for remand, has not granted his plea for undergoing psychiatric examination, the only option before us is to move either sessions court or high court. After seeking instructions from my client we shall move the appropriate court for such relief," Rajurkar said. Rajurkar said he had earlier urged the magistrate of the remand court to let Pravin undergo psychiatric tests as he wanted to show the accused was not in proper frame had earlier given a statement to police saying he had shot at his brother because he was being neglected and humiliated by him. On the day of the incident, Pravin said his elder brother ignored his presence and asked him to approach Pramod's personal assistant to seek an appointment and this had provoked him to shoot the BJP leader. Pravin continues to be in judicial custody till May 17 as the police await forensic reports to establish that he shot at his brother on April 22 Pramod Mahajan to be cremated
tomorrow in Mumbai
The news, announced to mediapersons camping on the pavement outside Hinduja Hospital at Mahim, plunged the hundreds of BJP workers who had gathered there into gloom. PM, as Pramod Mahajan was known by friends and associates — often leading to the joke that his initials also stood for Prime Minister — was singled out as crown prince by Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the party’s silver jubilee celebrations in Mumbai last December when he said Mahajan was to L K Advani what Laxman was to Ram. The shrewd parallel by the Bhishmapitamah of BJP made it clear that Mahajan was the anointed one even though it fell short of explicitly stating that he would become party president after Rajnath Singh completed his one-year term. Mahajan’s family was told about his death at 2.30 pm, but the official announcement was delayed by another two hours. Mahajan’s wife, Rekha, and children, Rahul and Poonam, brother-in-law Gopinath Munde and other family members were present in the last hours. Rahul had prayed desperately at temples, dargarhs and churches but it was not to be. The funeral will take place at noon on Thursday at the Shivaji Park crematorium. Hinduja Hospital CEO Pramod Lele said that they had tried their utmost to save him. "Our team of surgeons, intensivists and anaesthetists headed by Dr G B Daver, along with the staff of the operation theatre and ICU and also international surgeons, worked round the clock, but unfortunately Pramodji passed away this afternoon." Dr Daver told reporters that Acute Respiratory Distress syndrome, which had been detected on Sunday, finally led to his collapse. ARDS, which indicates a complete breathing failure because the lungs are weighed down by fluid, led to cardio-respiratory failure at about 2 pm, hospital sources said. Mahajan was an aggressive young leader: Vajpayee NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday remembered late BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan as an aggressive representative of country's youth. "In his death, the country has lost a skilled organiser, a forceful orator and an aggressive representative of its youth," Vajpayee said in his tributes to Mahajan, who died in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday, twelve days after he was shot by his brother Pravin Mahajan. The former Prime Minister, who recently called Mahajan the BJP's "Lakshman", said his leadership skills not only benefitted the party but also the country. "He played a key role in nation-building. He was able to win trust of our opponents also as he carved a niche for himself in the party," Vajpayee remarked. The former Prime Minister, who paid floral tributes at the photograph of Mahajan placed at the BJP headquarters here, praised the late leader for his job in different positions in the party. "He held key positions in the party and carried out all his reponsibilites well," Vajpayee said. In his characterstic poetic style, the veteran BJP leader mourned Mahajan's death as an untimely loss of a dynamic young leader. Bina Badlon Ke Bijli Girne Ki Charcha Hamne Suni Hai. Yahan Apni Akhon Se Bharat Ki Tarunai Ko Puri Tarah Se Viksit Hone Se Pehle Hi Kaalchakra Ne Isko Ham Se Cheen Liya ! (We have heard about lightening hitting without clouds. Her we saw India's youth being snatched away even before it could develop fully), he said Pramod Mahajan passes away Mumbai, May 3
Mahajan, 56, breathed his last after developing complications from the penetrating injuries caused by the three bullets his younger brother Pravin had fired from a revolver from close range. Pramod Mahajan seemingly showed some improvement in the past few days at the PD Hinduja Hospital, where he was admitted on April 22 soon after the sensational shooting, but his condition deteriorated suddenly on Tuesday night. In his statement to the police, Pravin, 46, said he shot Pramod because the latter often humiliated him and refused to help him in his business. Among the front-ranking leaders of the BJP, Pramod Mahajan was considered a master strategist and one of its principal fundraisers. His death is a major blow to the party, which was ousted from power in the 2004 general election. |

The police arrested Pravin when he surrendered after allegedly shooting at his elder brother, Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, on April 22. He was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate R T Badge, who extended his police remand till May 3. ‘‘He is intelligent, well-educated and a voracious reader. He’s not cooperating—he evades questions and argues, which is slowing down the investigation,’’ Special Public Prosecutor Shrikant Bhat told the court. Requesting the extension of police custody, the prosecution said Pravin gave unsatisfactory answers about the bullets they believe he owns—of the 90 bullets Pravin has bought, only 34 have been traced. Also, the driver of the taxi Pravin took to Worli police station, is yet to be found. The police sent the hard disk of Pravin’s computer, seized from his house along with a telephone diary and two cellphones, to the Hyderabad Forensic Laboratory on Saturday. The prosecution said they want to confront Pravin with the results once they get them. Maintaining its stand since the start of the case, the defence appealed to the court to consider Pravin’s ‘mental care’. ‘‘There is no need for his further police custody. Why do the police need his custody if they are searching for the taxi driver? Why is police custody needed if they are awaiting records?’’ Pravin’s lawyer Nandkumar Rajurkar asked the court. Rajurkar feared the police might take advantage of Pravin’s alleged mental inability and extract a confession. To prove he was mentally unstable, Pravin’s defence also quoted well known psychiatrist C K Marfatia who listed nine points, all of which applied to the accused. Pravin, in a white kurta-pyjama, told the court: ‘‘I have only one car, which is in police custody and my humble request is it should be given to my family.’’ He added: ‘‘I want to read newspapers since I don’t know what developments have been taking place since (April) 23.’’ The cops’ case
On April 22, Pravin left Thane, with a weapon, and reached Pramod’s Worli residence. Pramod himself answered the door. They had a glass of water and talked for a while. Then Pravin pumped three bullets into Pramod. In the house were Pramod’s wife Rekha and servant Mahesh Wankhede, who immediately rushed to the residence of Gopinath Munde, who lives on the 12th floor of the same building. Dr Vivek Bham, head of Cardiology at J J Hospital, also rushed to his aid after hearing the shots. Pravin is being taken to the hospital every day, for medical check-ups

recovering
"The condition is still critical but stable and very gradually the requirement of drugs for blood pressure support is coming down. The recovery seems to be very slow but the direction is positive," Director (Administration), Hinduja Hospital, Anupam Verma, told reporters. Mahajan, who was being treated at Hinduja Hospital here after being shot at and critically injured by his brother Praveen on Saturday, continues to be on ventilatory support and dialysis, Verma said. All other vital parameters remain the same and medically this is going to be a long-drawn affair, Verma added Saturday, April 22, 2006 MUMBAI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan was shot at his residence by his younger brother on Saturday morning and was said to be in critical condition after four-hour long surgery at Hinduja hospital here. "His condition is serious. The mid-abdominal portion, including the liver and pancreas, was severely damaged and the bleeding has not yet been controlled. Our first priority is to stop the bleeding," hospital sources said. The condition is further complicated by the fact that Mahajan suffers from diabetes, they added Mahajan was seriously injured when his younger brother Pravin pumped several bullets into his chest at his 14th floor apartment at Worli around 8 am after a heated argument between the two. The BJP leader's wife and
some other family member witnessed the shocking incident after which a
doctor living in the same apartmnet complex rushed him to the Hinduja
hospital where he was immediately operated upon by a team of surgeons.
"We are fighting a
death battle," Bhattacharya told a TV channel. Mahajan has lost a fair
amount of blood and has been given as many as 40 bottles of blood, the
doctor said.
According to sources, the incident was a fallout of more than a decade-old dispute over family property. Purna Building is home to several powerful politicians from the state. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh also has his residence in the building.
