Rai Praveen Mahal Orchha
Rai Praveen was as well known for her enchanting beauty as for her poetry and music. The paramour of Indrajit Singh, in whose court she performed, her fame inevitably spread far and wide and finally reached the Imperial Court of Akbar. The Mughal emperor was smitten by her, and he arrogantly summoned her to his durbar. Indrajit Singh, Rai Parveen’s paramour, was too weak-kneed a ruler to defy the Imperial summons. The Rai Praveen Palace has constructed by Prince Indrajit Singh for his bellowed out of three stories. The walls ofthe central hall on the second story bear many paintings depicting the several moods of the Rai Praveen. The palace is combined with a garden divided into two parts wall and whice is popularly known as Anand Mahal bag (Garden). The Rai Praveen was a great beauty whose main accomplishments were dancing, horce riding and poetry. The famous poet Keshavdas has compiled Kavi priya to honour Rai Praveen and praised her beauty compairing herto Roopamti & Mriganayani. Akbar & Rai Praven-couplet

This palace was built
in honour of the eminent personality of Orchha noted for her beauty, flair
of poetry and music, Rai Parveen popularly known as 'Nightingale of Orchcha'.
Maharaja Indrajit Singh built the marvellous three-storeyed palace in 1618
A.D. also known as the Anand Mandal Bagh and also as the Rai Praveen Manika
Bhavan. The palce is embellished with a beauitful green garden where myriads
of shrubs and flowerbeds in various artistic shapes accentuate its beauty.
The most attractive part of the palace is its second floor where numerous
Nriya Mudras of Indian classical dance can be seen.
Orchha (State: Madhya Pradesh) has an imposing fort, dating back to the 16th century. The Fort Complex contains magnificent palaces of the Bundela kings presenting a matchless spectacle of those times. (Click on the images for bigger picture) One of such palace is Rai Praveen Mahal. This palace was built in honor of the ‘Nightingale of Orchha’, Rai Praveen. As per the legend when she had been to Emperor Akbar's court, she was lured by him to stay back in his court by denouncing her King of Orchha. But she returned back to Orchha without accepting the Emperor's offer. Built in 1618 using circa by then Maharaja Indrajit Singh is a three-storeyed palace. The second floor is decorated with the poses and postures of Indian dance. A octagonal shaped lush garden, with shrubs and flowerbeds developed in many artistic shapes, surrounds the palace. In the landscape beyond the palace various small temples and Betwa river can be seen. |
