Priyanka Chopra - Successful star, struggling actor
Tuesday, September 05, 2006.
Going purely by the number of films on hand Priyanka Chopra is Bollywood's undisputed Number One leading lady. While perceptions maybe reality, a prolific actor is  an outstanding one.

Priyanka Chopra entered Bollywood just three years back with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003) a slick spy thriller starring, besides herself, Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Amrish Puri and Kabir Bedi. There has been no looking back since then.

She has notched up around 15 films in three years, not counting cameo appearances. This year we have already seen her in 2 films (Krrish and Aap Ki Khatir), with possibly 5 more lined up for release (Bekasoor, Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute to Love, Don, Deodhar Gandhi and God Tussi Great Ho)

There is an interesting facet to two of Chopra's forthcoming films.

In Bekasoor she is paired opposite Govinda for the first time. Ironically, the romantic thriller reportedly not in the Govinda vein, was one of her first films in Bollywood. It was canned in 2002 as Ek Hasina Ek Diwana but never released. Chopra, then a newcomer, must have been elated at having got a role opposite an established star like Govinda. One wonders how she feels about the movie being pulled out of cold storage now when she is the established star and Govinda the struggling one.

Similarly, Deodhar Gandhi, in which Chopra is paired opposite Sunny Deol, was filmed during 2002 and has been revived now for release.

One wonders if producers are attempting to cash in on the actor's current popularity to recover money from projects they had earlier written off?

Chopra is an obvious favorite as leading lady amidst Bollywood producers today, a fact that she modestly acknowledges by saying she is thankful that the film industry has been so forthcoming in taking her in its fold.

However, one can’t help but wonder as to what the producers really see in Chopra - a talented actress or a charming screen presence. Her comfort in front of the camera notwithstanding Chopra has yet to be challenged as an actress. Perhaps the fault lies with Chopra herself for just riding her popularity and not being pernickety when picking her roles.

Chopra maintains that she has acted in diverse roles but seems to sense the problem. She admits that she is not sure what type of an actor she is - method or spontaneous. A movie buff herself, her sole criterion for accepting a film role is whether or not she will enjoy seeing the film herself.

One forthcoming film in which Chopra may get an opportunity to show her histrionic talent is Chamki Chameli directed by Shyam Benegal. Produced by Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta the film has musical score by AR Rahman. Chopra, whose role was first offered to Kareena Kapoor and then Urmila Matondkar, must consider herself lucky to have got the opportunity.

There has been some buzz about Chopra's singing abilities. She, however, maintains that despite people advising her to sing in her films she is not inclined to do so because expectations will be high. Besides she would need to train for it.
