Salman khan Profile Page  2
His recent encounter with love has proved more gripping than any on screen potboilers. His wild outbursts with his so called girlfriend, Miss World-turned-actress Aishwarya Rai has landed him in direct violation of the Law. Media has ostracized him as wild brute while religious fundamentalists have tried to stifle him on moral grounds.
He stands accused of manslaughter and has been in the center of the Endangered Deer Hunting controversy. Come fall of 1998, Salman Khan saw himself being pushed into corner by series of legal troubles which landed him in a hot soup. While shooting for the song sequence, 'Mhare Hivda' in Jodhpur, Rajasthan for Yashraj's ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, he accompanied several costars for a hunting excursion in Thar Desert. They inadvertently lost their way and ventured into Bishnoi reserve, where Salman shot a black buck, a member of an endangered species, a punishable act under Indian Penal Code. As a tribe that worships and considers sacred all forms of life The Bishnoi Tribe, physically took the actor under their custody, only to hand him over to unrelenting local police authorities and the magistrate put him in jail, quite mercilessly. The scandal turned out be a jackpot for the Press & Media who went overboard in churning out one story after another against the hapless actor and trying to tarnish his image.
Thereafter media has focused on the rambunctious relationship with Aishwarya Rai, whom he has been dating acting even before 1999's hit Hum Dil De Chuke
Sanam. Rumors of physical abuse with his Pakistani girlfriend Somy Ali have always existed. And somewhat similar charges have been leveled by Aishwarya Rai’s family who have never really approved of their relationship in the first place. The media was more than happy to report the Salman’s anguish and despair as he, as neighbors claim, screamed, howled and pounded the doors Aishwaya’s apartment pleading to be let in.

The whole affair of sore relationship and bitter emotions came to broad daylight, when Aishwarya's parents lodged a complaint with the Mumbai police, accusing that an inebriated Khan pelted stones on windowpanes and broke the furniture in Aishwarya's home threatening them with dire consequences. The Rais categorically stated in the complaint that they "should not be held responsible for any untoward incident involving the actor." (B4U TV, Jan 2002).

Then an agitated Khan barged onto the sets of Aishwarya' upcoming film Ramesh Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho’, literally shoving the actress to the ground. It was only when spectators intervened that he was forced to leave. While rushing back, he banged his car into Aishwarya's, injuring her and leaving witnesses shocked. (B4U TV, Jan 2002).

Later, in fall of 2002, on the sets of Aishwarya's film with Shahrukh Khan, Salman entered into another verbal feud with Shahrukh Khan. As reported by Hindustan Times, Shahrukh Khan’s attempt to interfere and calm Salman in the couple's heated altercation, was met by bucolic verbal attack by Salman, and ever since the two are not on talking terms (even though, some newspaper have reported that Salman has tendered an apology). It was only after this incident that Aishwarya Rai broke her silence and went public with her complaints. Her side of story was reported in September 2002 when she categorically stated, “I have broken up with Salman in March but Salman finds it difficult to cope with it. He has not stopped calling me and talking crap. He is alleging me of affairs with my co-stars and his behavior is nothing short of harassment. I’m being linked to literally everyone, from Abhishek Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan. Salman would get dangerously physical in inflicting pain, and I had to go on with life as if nothing has happened.” (The Times of India, September 27, 2002)
Aishwarya's claims didn’t deter Khan from behaving otherwise, as for him relationship was still not over. ‘Olives’ a nightclub became the scene of Salman’s next onslaught,
when Ranbir, actor Rishi Kapoor's son, while commenting on an attractive girl allegedly said, "Wow, she's gorgeous. She reminds me of Aishwarya." On the edge of his temper, Salman lost his nerve and attacked Ranbir all guns blazing. Salman tried to compensate for his misdemeanor by giving a gold watch to Ranbir followed by several designer shirts to convey his apology –but soon the press found out the whole story. (Cineblitz, Mar. 2002)]
Within a week after Rai's interview, Khan, while on his way back from Night Out, ran his car over four men sleeping on the pavement, leaving one dead and injuring two others. Khan ran away from the scene in spite of the presence of a policeman in his car ( Policeman was a part of the police protection given to Salman in view of threats from the underworld mafia). His claim was that he felt his life was under threat by the gathered mob after the collision while others allege that all this was to
avoid a blood-alcohol test. Khan responded by revealing that it was his bodyguard after all who was driving and not him. The claim of the policeman present there, clearly implicated Salman as the person who was driving. Subsequently, the protection services to the actor were also called off, although it had nothing to with the accident.

Even before the case goes to trail, many quote similar precedents and are apprehensive on the issue of Salman being convicted. One of the more frivolous charges leveled against him question his inclination to remove his shirt at every drop of the hat.
Salman defends himself, “When a good body is an asset in this show business, there’s no reason I shouldn’t remove my shirt and show what it takes. When I am at home I am shirtless, so “bare it” is not new for me. I do it even while I am walking down the road and need to let some heat off.  If someone has a problem with it, he better gets lost.” (Rediff, June 1998)

Salman has been a rebel. He has kept the press and the media at bay, much to their discomfort. And Media has found a perfect target in him. Though stories of his arrogance put him off.  In an interview with Rediff June 1998 Salman exhorts, “If you wish to typecast and call me arrogant, it’s entirely your wish, but I speak the truth and I am not scared of standing up for it. A section of press wants me to obsequiously follow and take whatever they write about me. But it ain’t gonna happen, at least with me. If press goes about writing trash and demeaning your image and value system, you can not just sit quite and take the shit. It can hurt your relationships with your dear ones and land you in trouble. Someone else wants to sell his magazine, and why should I be the guinea pig.” Says Salman, “Had I been so bad, everyone around would have been scared of me. Children still come running to me for autographs and their parents encourage them to do so. The fact of the matter is, the people who feel scared are the ones who feel guilty inside of writing against me when things were not going my way. All I have tried to do is dissuade ‘Yellow Journalism’ by refusing interviews to such journalists, who now castigate me as Rude.” Reiterates Salman,“Since they have not been entertained, they have resorted to writing low and irresponsibly about me and I refuse to take it. I stand by my principles.”(Rediff, June 1998).

Some are more inquisitive about what those principles are while others wait for his next release ‘Marigold’ an Indo English production featuring Salman. The plot revolves around a B-grade Hollywood star who is left in the middle of no where while shooting in India. And then she has to accept a role in a Bolywood flick, to pay for her travel back. Directed by Hollywood’s Willard Scot the movie will make Salman the only leading man to brace and face the American suburban audience, as the edited movie opens in America. Let’s hope his life gets on track, as Salman’s career is still going pretty strong, contrary to the wishes of many.

Labeled as Bollywood's original brat and Media’s loath notwithstanding, Salman is still the greatest crowd puller who can turn them into a mass hysterical frenzy. Girls go crazy every time he flaunts his bare sculpted torso on the big screen. Rumor mills and gossip mongers work overtime in trying to catch ripe new trivia from his life, a fight here or so called affair there. Salman chooses to keep his mouth shut. His claim is that he doesn’t want to please everyone and what the world thinks of him doesn’t make a difference. He doesn’t get along with press and is averse to answering questions they ask. Nevertheless, he is the hottest hunk of Hindi cinema, a star performer and safe bet, both in Indian and overseas market.

Salman's life and career has been a roller coaster ride, without much planning which other contemporaries have been blessed with. His debut in offbeat flick as Farouque
Shaikh's younger brother in 'Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988) got unnoticed. It was only after Sooraj Barjatya's rocking romance turned Salman into a teen icon overnight, producers lined up to sign him and rake in a Moolah riding on his instant stardom.

Years later, Salman’s Never-say-die loyalists swear by him despite his alleged mood swings. Whether it is Sooraj Barjatya, Sanjay Bhansali or even David Dhawan he is a Golden boy to all of the directors. Apart from Govinda, David Dhawan’s eternal favorite Salman is the only star who has struck a chord with the plump director. From 'Judwaa' (1997), 'Biwi No. 1', to 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge' and quite recently ‘Partner’which is a big hit, Salman continues to make you laugh and cry at the same time.

Sooraj Barjatya never makes a film without him, David Dhawan always come up with a success formula with Salman as a protagonist and Sohail Khan, his brother cum producer has occasional hits up his sleeves. Salman quite gracefully played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' (1994) and Madhuri walked off with all the praise. Soon after the stupendous success of 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun!' turned over a new leaf from a chocolate boy hero to heavy duty action loaded flicks like Rakesh Roshan's 'Karan Arjun' and K K Singh's 'Veergati'. With occasional teasers like taking off the shirt, which became an instant rage, Sohail Khan was able to pull off a hit with “Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya’(1998) which displayed shirtless Salman Khan with his antics.

Sanjay Bhansali. 'Khamoshi' (1996) saw Salman unleashing his acting talents and depth. Playing a role of a sensitive music composer in love with a daughter of deaf & dumb couple, his acting capabilities came to the fore. He followed this with another stellar performance in 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' playing opposite Aishwarya Rai, who was by that time being linked to Salman, as his love interest. Both of them have denied it time and again, and are keeping shut about it.

In one of the most harrowing times which cast an evil spell on his life, Salman got arrested in Rajasthan towards the end of 1998, while shooting for Barjatya's 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'. Charged for hunting down the endangered black buck deer, he was taken into custody only to be released later. And the industry had a sigh of relief as close to Rs. 100 Crores in production was riding on his shoulders.

But Salman kept quite and let his work do the talking. Scoring numerous hits in succession, for Salman there has been no looking back. His movie career has gone from strength to strength and he has a carved out a niche for himself, which many only dream about. Attempts to blot his image have had no bearing on his soaring popularity and career graph. In fact his contributions to Indian cinema can not be discounted for any reason whatsoever. He commands respect, love and appreciation from his peers and other quarters of public life. His qualitative work has found enough takers as well as critical acclaim. The continuous streak of commercial success in the last one and half decade, make his movies, a collector’s delight. He’s a movie buff’s dream come true and an ageless poster boy who has kept the entire nation entertained for years on end. Many envy his magic with people and his uncanny ability to strike it with the audience. But all said and done, he has still got years on his side and miles to go. For the time being there seems to be no stopping, personally and professionally. There’s only one Salman Khan and he simply goes on.
