Taj 'immune' to harmful
chemical particles: study
Agra (PTI): Here's some
good news -- a study on the impact of atmospheric pollution on the Taj
Mahal has allayed fears of any chemical reaction of airborne particles
on the marble structure.
The study, undertaken
by Archaeological Survey of India as part of a UNESCO-funded project, proved
that "no calcium sulphate or calcium nitrate particles were found in harmful
proportions in the Taj's ambience", ASI sources here said.
The study was carried
out in the air pollution laboratory of the ASI by assistant superintendent
archaeologist Deepankar Banerji.
The study, however, did
not look into the impact of sand-carrying winds from Rajasthan's desert
that are said to have a "sandpaper effect", damaging its smooth outer surface.
