National Institute of DesignThe sprawling green 20-acre campus of the National Institute of Design (NID) on the west bank of the river Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, presents a picture postcard scenario, starkly in contrast to the din of traffic on the neighbouring Mumbai-Kandla highway.
Set up 1961, NID today is the premier design hotspot of the country, providing research, service and training in industrial design and visual communication. It is still relatively small, with about 250 students. Courses, There are three main streams – 1.Industrial design 2.Communication designs which includes video programming and film, animation and graphic design; and 3.Textile and apparel design. NID has advanced courses of each compressed into two and a half years to three years duration for graduates of architecture, engineering, fine and applied arts. The other, of four and a half years duration, is for school leavers. And that’s NID’s trump card. Academic evaluation at NID is a system of constant performance review by an internal jury. No marks and examinations here.

Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology,(NIIFT)
Mohali , Punjab.Realising the long pending need of the textile and garment industry particularly that of Punjab, for
trained professionals, the Department of Industries and commerce, Punjab announced the establishment of
NIIFT in 1995.  NIIFT, in its contemporary essence, has emerged as a premier institute of North India possessing the
ideology of commitment, creativity and professional  integrity.  The ongoing information revolution promises to bring
the world closer to cohesion. In the emerging face of  fast moving information, technological transfer is
bound to take place at a higher speed. And as the  International borders blur, Supply Chain Management
and Information Technology will take a crucial role in Apparel manufacturing.   Even the Domestic market has shown tremendous growth  and potential which is yet to be realized. The future  requires generation of real value service for the
customers in a cost and time effective manner. One of  the major limitations of the market is that there are
not enough good players that can translate this demand  into higher quality garments.

 NIIFT has not only been training the future designers  and technocrats but also guiding the industry by
offering its professional expertise in planning and  designing.  The future vision of NIIFT is to make it an
internationally reputed Research and Development institute for Textiles and Apparels.  NIIFT at present runs four courses :
FASHION DESIGN (FD)  The Course is perpetually designed to accord full
reign to the imaginative flair of the students harmonised with practicality required at the
industrial level. 3 year graduate diploma programme after +2 
GARMENT MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY (GMT) 
It imparts to the students the temperament to gain  technical prowess through advanced work study and
education methodology adopted using classroom, laboratory and workshop simulation of situations faced
in business administration and industry management. 2 year postgraduate diploma programme 
KNITWEAR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY [KDT]  This 2-year postgraduate diploma programme covers
design, knitted fabric development, garment development, production manufacturing technology and
merchandising. The Knitwear Design and Technology programme has been methodically planned to incorporate
all areas of knowledge required for the Indian  Knitwear industry.
