How to NATURALLY deal with pain
Posted on July 19, 2008 by merri
I don’t want to go on and on about it but as I have mentioned before, I have arthritis. It is scattered about my body (in a very fickle manner) but covers areas like spine, digits(both toes and fingers), and both hips. I deal with it as best I can and try to keep up to date on ideas, diet and exercise known to help symptoms/ progression and to alleviate pain and inflammation.

I do not doubt that there are lots of pharmaceuticals that would competantly handle my problem but there are always side effects and sadly, nsaids(Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) all have pretty lethal side effects. Here is a site that corroborates my opinion. Especially read from about half way down, from “adverse effects”.

Nsaid information

Instead, I choose to utilize natural methods as much as possible. I know many others choose to go the natural route and sometimes it is difficult to know what is good and what is a waste of money.

Here are a couple of supplements that I use, that I find work very well;

Bromelain
This enzyme(is)found in pineapple. Scientists think bromelain may actually break down protein in the blood, which explains its ability to curb pain-causing inflammation (and why it’s used as a meat tenderizer). Unlike over-the-counter and prescription pain drugs that come with stomach and heart risks, bromelain is considered safe. Take 200 to 400 milligrams a day when you’re hurting.

Boswellia
An herb long used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, boswellia may be more effective than drugs like ibuprofen for reducing inflammation. The acid in the herb seems to block an enzyme that generates inflammatory chemicals. Biochemist Holly Phaneuf, PhD, formerly of the University of Utah and author of Herbs Demystified, says the herb may be useful for pain associated with osteoarthritis, a common disorder among people over 40 that destroys the cushioning in joints. Another target: asthma, which is often linked to inflammation. A typical dose is 450 to 1,200 mg a day.

There are many others, such as MSM but it is probably best to talk to a naturopathic physician to make sure that what you choose to try is best for you.

Here’s the site from which  I found this information(it also lists other supplements/herbal preparations good for other common health problems.
