For all those who believe women make bad drivers, this one is not for you. The Delhi government and non-profit organizations are training women to be taxi drivers. In a city where commuting is terribly unsafe for women, this is a welcome change. Those who have been chosen to be part of this drive, are happy. Like Mamta who will be able to do this for a living in just about a month. "I took it up to support my family financially. Earning a living also makes me feel independent," she said. Ten women have spent six months learning how to drive. They are also learning English and will soon be at Delhi's service. "It is an initiative for Commonwealth Games and make women in Delhi roads safer," Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit said. And as far as their safety is concerned, they have been given a training in karate. But how do you find one of these women drivers? That's what the government has to work out in the next few weeks. But it is clear they are going to be in major demand. "I often work late and commute between Friends Colony to Mandi House. It will be great to have such a service which will make us feel safe," said Hema, a freelance photographer. So, buckle up and enjoy
the ride.
