Catering Plan for Commonwealth Games

Aug. 26 - Delhi is set to host next year’s XIX Commonwealth Games and plans are now underway including the catering preparations for the massive event.

The main dining hall in the Games Village will be serving a whopping 36,000 meals a day to feed a family of 10,000 players, officials and coordinators for a fortnight.

Catering for the event will be divided into food clusters depending on the  nutritional requirements of athletes. Water vending machines will be place strategically in the Village area with juices, energy drinks and cold drinks to be made available in the main dining hall, casual dining halls and carts at convenient points.

The menu will be put through safety checks and will feature cuisine from all over the world. Each venue will offer specific “athlete venue meals” based on the requirement of participants of the event being hosted there.

During the main meals in the Games Village, there will also be special food surprises for the players like a birthday cake or a food corner showcasing Indian delicacies. Every food item will bear a tag listing ingredients and nutritional value of the item.

The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multi-sport event held every four years with the participation of elite athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations’ 53 member countries. Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes. The Commonwealth Games Federation will be responsible for managing the games.

The four constituent countries of the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games. Individual teams are also sent from the British Crown dependencies  Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, and many of the British overseas territories.

The Australian external territory of Norfolk Island also sends its own team, as do the Cook Islands and Niue, two states in free association with New Zealand.

The event traces its beginnings to the British Empire Games held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The name was changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and then assumed its current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

The event includes sports that are mainly played in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. The Commonwealth Games will be held in India for the first time on October 3 to 14 next year.

With a population of over 15 million, Delhi is one of the largest cities in the world. This will be the largest multi-sport event conducted in the country, previously it hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982.
