Where Gandhi once stayed Situated at a distance of 5 km (3 miles) from the Ridge is the lovely suburb of Summer Hill, at an altitude of 1,982 M (6,500 ft) and on the Shimla - Kalka railway line. In these quiet surroundings with secluded shady walks, lived Mahatma Gandhi during his visits to Shimla. The Mahatma lived in the elegant Georgian house of Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, daughter of the last ruler of the Punjab, Maharaja Dalip Singh, and free India's first woman minister. Shimla Sight Seens Gallery Kathupeak Himalyan grandeur can truly be appreciated from the peaks. For scaling peak there is more than storm and precipice' between you and your peak.The snowline in the western Himalayas starts at around 17,000 ft., and these peaks are not for everybody. But the thrill of being on a peak with the clouds passing above you and below you, the light and share show before you and the wide horizons around you, simply enchant. Forming the backdrop to the famous tourist spot of Narkanda, the Hatu peak has surprisingly remained a lesser-known spot. Despite its proximity few have set out to explore its height.The Hatu peak is only 7 km from Narkanda, one can get there in a two hours walk and be back by dayend. But ideally it is suited as a camping site. Looking down on the valleys while the sun rises, curling mists playing about, a Himalyan sunset, a starlit night on the peak or moonlight bathing the countryside is an experience worth treasuring. To get to the peak one has to take the road from Narkanda to Thanedar and after getting to the first milestone a small motorable road leading into the jungles of the mountain gets you to the mountain top. This road is open only in the summer and autumn and only motorable by experienced his motorists in powerful but small vehicles. Walkers will love the trail "The woods are lovely, dark and deep". Alpine oaks, evergreen oaks, walnuts, yews, Himalayan cedars, fir, spruce, lofty pines and alpine are some of the trees one encounters along the way. The mountain glens with their scarred rocky sides add endlessly to the beauty of the scene. A variety of lovely flowers, beautiful ferns, little birds with exquisitely charming colours and entrancing notes, butterflies with wings of the most beautiful hues and pattern flitting from the flower to flower keep the mind absorbed in the beauties of God's wonderful world. on the peak where a priest comes to reside in the summer. Nearby a small hut has been built by the public works department which gives a commanding view of the vallies and the snowpeaks. In tribute to the mountain and to its Devi the local people hold an annual summer fair in the second week of may. From the temple, a jungle track leads to a mountain top meadow, the Joh Bagh.
